This book's unique multidisciplinary approach provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of biophysico-chemical reactions and processes of AOCs in various environments, along with associated analytical techniques. It offers a chilling reminder of the destructive power that contaminants have when interacting with the Earth's precious natural resources, and outlines restorative strategies to-ward implementing solutions for protecting the health of vibrant —and critical— ecosystems.

Spatial variability within fields has been demonstrated by soil testing results and crop yield differences. Crop responses vary greatly in uniformly managed fields because of soil and landscape differences. An understanding of variation within the landscape requires a means of mapping spatially variable parameters. Existing traditional techniques of spatial statistics do not account for the spatial correlation between observations and take little account of gradual change, either from one soil class to another or within any one class. Differently, geostatistics treats variables as continua in a joint attribute and geographic

Since the dawn of civilization until the last decades of the past century, mining activity, especially that concerning base and precious metals, represented a resource for human population, owing to its importance in many fields of interest. By the second half of the last century, however, mining activity declined until final closure in the face of developing countries, owing to decreasing mineral resources and to metal price drop. In this book, the effects of former mine activities and the related environmental problems are discussed, with the ultimate goal of investigating the fate of potentially toxic elements in the environment and their impact on the conterminous land.

The goal of the manual is to supply an operational tool for pedologists, agronomists, environmentalists, and all of the other specialists who carry out land evaluation for agriculture and forestry or, more generally, stakeholders and policy makers who make decisions at the local level based on the knowledge of the nature of soil. Discussion of the topics is not only technical and operational, but also in-depth and didactic; therefore, the text may also be used as a valid complement for students majoring in subjects that involve soil use, management and conservation. The literature offers a wide choice of possible soil and land evaluation methods, while knowledge of the relationships existing between the physical characteristics of lands, particularly those of soils, and the requirements of specific uses is limited.
